President Biden is expected to sign bill before midnight Friday to avert government shutdown.
The Senate voted 69 to 28 Thursday night to approve a short-term spending bill to fund the government and avoid a shutdown. The vote came hours after the House of Representatives passed the bill in a 221 to 212 vote. The bill, known as a continuing resolution, extends current funding until February 18.
It now goes to President Biden who must sign it by midnight Friday to avoid a partial shutdown that would include furloughs, as well as shuttered parks, monuments, and other federal institutions.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said, “This is a good compromise that allows an appropriate amount of time for both parties in both chambers to finish negotiations on appropriations.”
